5 Tips On How To Craft The Perfect Just Because Card

Hi, I’m Jill DeLuce, the owner of DeLuce Design letterpress paper goods and gift products.

I’ve always been a card sender. For like ever. I think it all started when I was a child. Every Christmas my mom bought me my own personalized note cards and fresh pens and I loved to browse the greeting card aisle at the drugstore for the perfect card to send to my family. I was living in Southern California and half of my family was hundreds of miles away in Northern California. One of my favorite ways to communicate with them was to send a Just Because card. As an adult, I realize there is nothing like the surprise of sifting through your bills to find a pretty envelope inside with your name hand-written on the envelope.

A simple hello could lead to a million things - DeLuce Design

Today, as Pretty By Post’s guest blogger, I’m going to share 5 tips for crafting the perfect Just Because card. The kind of card that doesn’t need an occasion to be sent. Just Because cards are one of my favorites because unlike a Birthday or Thank You card, which are somewhat expected, a Just Because card can brighten someone’s day at the most unexpected time!

So let’s get to it.

Tip #1: Keep a Collection of Cards, Pens and Stamps Handy

Keep an organized collection of 15-20 cards on hand that are not specific to a birthday or any occasion.

Don’t forget to keep a stash of postage stamps. The USPS releases a new commemorative stamp each year, which are some of my favorites. Why not make the outside of your envelope look as pretty as the card inside?

Stock up on nice pens to write with. My favorite pens are the Marvy Le Pen’s, and my second favorites are fine-point Sharpies. They come in a variety of colors and flow smoothly on good quality cardstock.

When you have all the supplies you need on hand, you are able to write your note when the moment strikes you and drop it off at the post office without delay.

Tip #2: Draft Your Note on a Piece of Blank Paper

I always write a first draft of my note on a separate sheet of paper before I write inside the card. I like to get my words just right, to ensure no mistakes are made on the inside of the card.

Tip #3: Use Beautifully Made Cards and Fresh Ink Pens

It is more enjoyable to write on beautiful, quality cardstock with a fresh ink pen and the more you enjoy the process, the better your handwritten note will be.

The recipient will see and feel the quality of the paper your message is written on, making it that much more keepsake worthy. I like paper with cotton fibers and I like to coordinate the ink color of my pen to match the design on the front of the card and/or envelope.

Tip #4: Don’t Get Hung Up on What to Write

You don’t have to be intimidated by the blank slate inside a card, if you let the front of the card be your inspiration.

Whether the front of the card is an inappropriate joke, a cute illustration or a favorite quote, your message inside can be a spinoff of the design on the front. Maybe share a fun memory of your past together or something current you encountered that reminded you of them.

Tip #5: Make it Memorable

Just Because cards are a time capsule in a way. Chances are your handwritten Just Because card will be read more than once and tucked inside a drawer to be saved for many years to come. Let your words be authentic and from the heart.

I plan to send a Just Because Card to my Dad, he’s my favorite to send those kind of cards to. Earlier this year I planned a Happy Mail Snail Mail Card Shower for my Dad. My brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins all sent him cards, pictures and letters during the chosen week. Some people sent a card a day for a week. He was surprised and really enjoyed it.
